Review: Ethos Vegan Kitchen Gyro Sandwich with Coleslaw

What can be better than eating vegan comfort food in a snug booth while reading a good book in a warm, modern diner?

Ethos Vegan Kitchen is always busy, especially on weekends, so I planned a late lunch. That turned out to be a good call. I was seated right away.

This time I arrived 20 minutes before brunch ended, and the biscuits and gravy and pancakes looked awfully tempting, but I decided to stick with lunch. Can’t wait to come back and try those others. For you readers, of course!

Complete meal ordered on this visit: Garlic Knots, “Chickun” Gyro Sandwich with Coleslaw, Cookies.

The Gyro sandwich comes with your choice of “chickun” or seitan. I chose the “chicken” because I thought it would be a little juicier and I was right. It’s marinated and grilled. Sandwiches come with a side. I chose coleslaw. Other sandwich side choices are chips with hummus or a cup of fruit.

Look at that soft pita filled with strips of “chicken,” romaine lettuce, red onion, tomato, and creamy tzatziki sauce with fresh dill and diced cucumber. The meat was tender and juicy, not tough or hard or dry. The combination of crunchy vegetables, tender meat, and tangy sauce in a slightly chewy wrap was a perfect blend of gyro flavors. Plus it was satisfyingly filling.

This slaw didn’t last long!

The creamy coleslaw tasted a lot like KFC coleslaw. That’s a good thing. The cabbage was either grated or sliced very thinly and the mayo-like base was neither too tart nor too sweet.

Decor is both modern and homey with an upscale diner feel. Lots of cute small booths for single serving diners. And a long bar which is also an option when dining solo.

Some of the twenty bar chairs at the long bar.

I’ve been here before during the lunch rush and avoided a wait by squeezing up to the bar. The bar runs almost the length back wall with 20 bar stool chairs. (Yes, I counted.)

While a peppy jazz music played, it was mostly drowned out by the laughter and talk of a dining room full of diners. The overall ambiance was of comfortable activity.

Good background for eating and reading.

That gyro looks amazing!! This place is right next to where I get my hair done but I’ve never made a point to check it out. Guess I’m going to have to change that… thank you for the recommendation!
